This project is for construction of an approximately 34-acre wetland treatment system and improved wetland habitat through the restoration of a dehydrated historical wetland marsh area at the southeast shoreline of Lake Conine located west of Lucerne Park Road in Winter Haven, Polk County, Florida. The area has been dehydrated at least partially due to development in the surrounding areas and the subsequent drainage infrastructure that now routes large volumes of previously-contributing stormwater runoff either around the wetland totally or through linear ditches in the wetland itself. The area still possesses primarily organic soils with deep areas of peat and is currently still considered a wetland. Removal of the stormwater inflows, however, has contributed to the degradation of the wetland quality, loss of premium wildlife habitat, and de facto treatment of the stormwater prior to its discharge into Lake Conine itself. The purpose of this project is to restore the hydraulic connectivity of the wetland area with its historical upstream contributing basins to improve the water quality draining to the lake, restore a vibrant and diverse wildlife habitat, and to improve the hydration of the wetland area so that it can become a “high quality” wetland.
