The Project will implement the Town of Chapel Hill Arterial Variable Message Sign (VMS) System. Throughout the Plans and these Project Special Provisions the terms VMS and DMS (Dynamic Message Sign) may be used interchangeably. The scope of this project includes: The installation and integration of five (5) new pedestal mount dynamic message sign (DMS) units of Type A (approach speeds of 45 mph or greater). These are labeled as DMS-C, D, E, F, G, I, and J on the Plans. The installation and integration of five (5) new pedestal mount dynamic message sign (DMS) units of Type B (approach speeds less than 45 mph). These are labeled as DMS-A, B, and H on the Plans. The installation of new underground conduit with fiber optic cable and integration with existing Town-owned fiber optic cables to form a complete communications path from each DMS to the TOC. The installation and integration of new DMS control software. The VMS systems will be controlled from the Chapel Hill Traffic Operations Center (TOC) located at 6900 Millhouse Road and from existing remote network connections with UNC Public Safety located at 285 Manning Drive, UNC Environment Health and Safety located at 1120 Estes Drive, Chapel Hill Police Department located at 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Chapel Hill Emergency Operations Center (EOC) located in Fire Station 1 at 403 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and NCDOT Statewide Transportation Operations Center (STOC) located at 1636 Goldstar Drive in Raleigh. New electrical service will be installed at each new device. This project encouraged MBE/WBE participation.
