The vegetation in the project area is described as mid to late seral stage with a downward trend of herbaceous understory vegetation and a healthy shrub component (WRI 5884 proposal). This project will address two concerns with vegetation in the project area. First, there are expansive areas of even-aged, decadent stands of sagebrush with no understory. Second, there is expansion and infilling of pinyon and juniper trees into areas once dominated by shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, ponderosa pine, and mountain brush communities. The infilling of pinyon juniper trees and even-aged sagebrush stands have negatively affected soil resources, water and nutrient cycles, fire regimes, fuel loading, and wildlife habitat. Bonds required.
