Through the preconstruction design and environmental processes, it was determined that 90% of the existing historic Rogers Bridge structure is in need of strengthening or replacement. As such, a partial or full rehabilitation of the structure was not an option, and the existing Pennsylvania Petit type through truss bridge is to be removed and replaced with a replica truss. The existing 30” diameter water line, currently spanning the bridge in place of a deck, will be removed and replaced with three smaller diameter water lines placed below the new bridge deck.Care will be required when removing the existing truss as several members are earmarked for salvage for a future public art project, and will need to be handled per specific instructions included in the bridge contractor’s plans. When complete, the new pedestrian bridge will connect parkland and trails on each side of the River, restoring the connection between Gwinnett and Fulton Counties, and the Cities of Duluth and Johns Creek. This project encouraged MBE/WBE participation.
