This project will construct a new single deck general purpose berthing pier to replace the existing Pier 6. Adequate ship berthing is required to support the mix of Pacific Fleet ships home-ported at Naval Base San Diego. The project will demolish the existing Pier 6 in its entirety. The existing Pier 6 is 60-ft wide by 1,377-ft long (82,620 sq. ft.) with an additional 3-ft ledge around the pier perimeter and is a pile supported concrete structure. The new Pier 6 will be 120-ft wide by 1,500-ft long (180,000 sq. ft.) with an additional 2.5-ft ledge around the pier perimeter that will provide capacity for four simultaneously berthed ships. Design shall be in accordance with UFC 4-152-01 “Design: Piers and Wharves” with a 75-year service life. The new pier structure will consist of pre-stressed concrete piles supporting a concrete superstructure. High mast lighting and pier entrance lights are required. Special construction features include load out ramp cradles on each side of the new pier extending from the quay wall. Compressed air and saltwater utilities are not required for this project. Assistance will be available in obtaining bonds, lines of credit, Insurance, necessary equipment, supplies, materials or related technical assistance.
