Description
Running parallel to Palm Beach Countys coast, lies 47 miles of natural coral reef formations, part of Floridas Coral Reef that stretches 360 miles from the St. Lucie Inlet to the Dry Tortugas. For the past 40 years, Palm Beach Countys Department of Environmental Resources Management (PBC ERM) has monitored these natural reefs and created new artificial reefs to introduce new habitat, offer additional areas for recreation, and protect natural reefs from overuse. These artificial reefs are most often made of limestone rock or concrete (e.g. culverts, catch basins, utility poles), pre-fabricated modules, and occasionally decommissioned ships that become marine habitats for fish, corals, sponges, and other marine life. PBC ERM has deployed 49 vessels, over 110,000 tons of concrete, and over 140,000 tons of limestone boulders to create more than 150 total artificial reefs. The current Artificial Reef Program requires one (1) vendor and estimates between three to ten artificial reef deployments/removals annually. Deployment sites will be in the Atlantic Ocean no more than four miles offshore of Palm Beach County and most deployments will occur at depths between 45 and 90 feet of water. A minimal amount of deployments may occur at inshore environments within Lake Worth Lagoon.
Prevailing wages.
