The Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve (BBSAP) was established in 1985. Spanning more than 984,000 acres and over 150 miles of coastline. BBSAP staff collects valuable water quality data through bi-monthly nutrient sampling along the coast and through continuous water quality monitoring. Water quality grab samples are collected at fixed sites within BBSAP for analysis by the Department’s Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration. In addition to water quality monitoring, staff of BBSAP also monitor seagrass and macroalgae at 100 fixed locations annually. Seagrass health and community structure can be analyzed to note any significant changes or trends. Seagrass is negatively impacted by propeller scarring where depths are shallow and boat traffic is high. The shallow, rocky nature of the Big Bend region requires boats to have a very shallow draft in order to access sampling sites and avoid any damage to the natural resources. Catamaran style boats with a low water pickup provide running draft of 4” and the ability to navigate choppy conditions. The initial term of the Contract will be on the date indicated on the Purchase Order and continue until June 30, 2024, with no renewal year(s).
