The Coral Protection and Restoration Program, within the Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection, was first established in 2020 to support the holistic management of Florida’s Coral Reef. The vision and mission of the Coral Protection and Restoration Program is to holistically manage, protect, and restore Florida’s Coral Reef (FCR) to ensure sustainable coral reef ecosystem functions and services by: • Effectively administering state and federal funding for Florida’s Coral Reef priorities; • Providing leadership for the Florida Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) response, restoration of Florida’s Coral Reef, and the enhancement of regional water quality, with a focus on Biscayne Bay; • Guiding regional, state, and national coral reef authorities, policies, and procedures, and recommendations to ensure consistency and effectiveness of reef management actions. The acquisition of this vessel is part of a larger legislative budget request and priority known as the "Florida's Coral Reef Restoration and Recovery Initiative" (FCR3). The goal of this initiative is to chart a bold course to the restoration and recovery of 25% of the structure and function of Florida’s Coral Reef by 2050. Through facilitating an unprecedented, evidence-based propagation and outplanting program conducted by the state and its partners, Florida’s Coral Reef will be restocked with hardy populations of native corals and other keystone species to re-establish and strengthen natural reproduction, dispersal, and recruitment patterns. As such, a dive vessel is needed in order to support DEP and partner initiatives that protect and restore Florida's Coral Reef and surrounding ecosystems.
