Chuluota Wilderness Area 3895 Curryville Rd. Chuluota, FL 32766

Invasive species have an ecological, economic and possible harm to health effect (mosquitoes). Invasive plants decrease biodiversity, and if left uncontrolled can limit land use for agriculture, homeowners, hunting, fishing, boating camping and swimming. At the present time, herbicide is one of the primary tools used to control invasive species. The methods of herbicide application include, but are not limited to, foliar spray, frill and girdle, stump, basal bark, and broadcast (liquid and granular). Seedlings of some species in mixed plant communities may be hand pulled in an effort to minimize the impact of herbicide on non-target vegetation. In some cases, mechanical methods may be necessary, if it is determined to be the most cost-efficient or effective way to treat the target vegetation. The mixed hardwood swamp in the south central portion of the Chuluota Wilderness Area has been part of an ongoing treatment plan to either maintain or eliminate invasive species in this area. This project includes 60 acres total. The Goal of this project is to use herbicide treatment on all Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council Category I & II species to achieve a maintenance control level of these species. Coral ardisia and tuberous sword fern will be the main targets of this treatment, but there may be other FLEPPClisted species found in this treatment area.
