The existing Lois Nelson public library was more recently expanded in 2012 expanding the original library to what it is today serving the local community with a variety of programming offerings. With that being said, the existing facility, while in great condition overall, is short on functional space and in need of a physical expansion to increase its overall offerings. While the site is relatively constrained, we’re exploring expanding out to the rear parking, to the side and or even vertical where feasibility and budget will allow. We envision a horizontal single and or two-story expansion as most feasible including a connection space with some minor interior renovation and exterior façade updating. An outdoor landscape and small gathering component would be ideal. We’re seeking a design team that can approach this project in a highly unique way, simplistics, minimalist, high-impact, low-cost and even in a potentially unconventional way all while maximizing and preserving the building legacy and local character to create an expanded location. The intent is for the interior of the existing Library to potentially remain as is if necessary for budget but some minor rework to select spaces. Traditional wood framing would be considered allowable as well if need be but needs to have a level continuity and connectivity. The goal is a small space telling a big story with a simplistic, minimalist and modern footprint, all under a zero-scape approach to maintenance.
